Do most people shy away from doing this? Like starters and alts and trannys? the prices are always alot less but usually the warranty reflects the fact that it is not new. I have always bought new but during these times I am very tempted to go down the refurbished road. What do you all think?

There's nothing wrong with refurbished as long as it's completely refurbished.

When you take your vehicle in for warranty repairs, remanufactured parts are what is replacing your failed component a lot of the time. A/C compressors, alternators, transmissions, etc are generallly all remanufactured. On GM engines and transmissions, if you pay for the repair out of pocket, generally you would receive an 3 year 100,000 mile warranty on those components, versus a 3 year 36 month warranty on a new one. Remanufactured parts are pretty much the standard in dealerships these days. So why not use a remanufactured part. Nothing wrong with that, just be careful of the source the part is coming from.

As long as the rebuilder does a good job, there is nothing wrong with using a rebuilt part. It's every bit as good as new, but it's much cheaper. Take a water pump for example. The cast iron (or aluminum) housing is used over again but with a new bearing pressed in. And along with a new seal and often a new impeller, it comes out every bit as good as new. The trick is to buy rebuilt parts from a well established rebuilder. They will trash cores that are no good, whereas a small rebuilder may use bad housings over again.

hmm, never knew that, just thought that I was getting a new part, otherwise I could take the Vette other places and pay less for the work!
