New guy here,
I just got a 99 coupe with auto tranny and I was wondering how much quicker is a stick shift compared to an auto. Everything being stock.

Depends on the driver. The auto has a faster top speed

Welcome to SmokinVette.

I am fairly certain the manual is quicker in the 1/4 than an auto, but I have heard the top speed is faster in the auto.

I thought it was the other way around because the auto guys just have to mash the pedal?

Alot of people will say the driver and they are right, but AT's you don't have the time into clutching and shifting, but the MT you can keep the motor in it's prime RPM range longer, sooo.....

The manual is faster by about 2-3 tenths 0-60, but primarily due to the 3.42 rear gears in the manual compared to the 2.73 or 3.15 in the auto.
Swap the auto's rear gears and TC and it's ALL OVER then! :burnout:

I tried searching for changing gears but I couldn't find anything. Can you explain the process involved? What is the price?

IMO, the stick when talking about regular joes and the auto in the pro level.

Because the manual has the 3.42 it RPMS quicker than the taller 2.73 gear. Because of this the auto has a faster top speed, but it will get killed in 0-60 and the quarter mile against the 6 speed.

New cars with tap shift are being given way better rear end gears which is why they are a lot closer to the manuals. In some cases (such as the 2010 Camaro) the tap shift does 0-60 faster but looses in the 1/4 mile.

That's what I've always heard. Plus there is no chance for error in an auto. Just point it in the desired directions and step on it.

I love the six speed, has good top end, good 1/4 mile and it is so much more fun to drive than an auto, just my opinion of course, plus try taking an auto on a road course, nah, gotta have the six speed!

I have the A4 transmission and just had East Coast Superchargers replace the 3.15 gears with a set of 3.73's. It's like an entirely different car (but burns more gas too):burnout:
Cost wise, gears are about $400 if you can do it yourself. I had them replace the gears and install hardened shafts so I'll be ready when I add the supercharger :rockon6rk:
Installed with the shafts was about $1800.00, and that includes retuning the transmission.

Point in desired direction! lol Make sure you're pointed in the right direction!:burnout:

What about beefing up an auto transmission with a shift kit? When I was younger we use to do that with cars. Get a shift kit hook it up and go with a ratchet shifter or whatever the other guy wanted. It was great for drag racing. Hit the desired RPMs you get the idea:yoda:

I have read the stick is about 1/2 second quicker in the 1/4th mile. Because you can launch it at a higher rpm. But the automatic is a bit faster on the top end; about 5 mph I believe.

The gears I was referring to are the rear end gears. It's easy to find a used set on the forums for a good price. A set out of a Zo6 will have been been shot-peened for additional strength.
Since the rear end and TC are in the same assembly (rear of the car) it is cost efficient to do both at the same time.
Other than N2O, there is probably no other mod that will give you the same bang for the buck as a rear end/TC change in an auto. It WILL feel like a different car!!:burnout:

That seems a little high UNLESS the 6 speed guy has really been practicing enough to get his launches and shifts perfect. The 2.73s are very anemic though:vomitbuddy:
What you do see quite often, is AFTER a gears and TC swap, autos are usually a good 1/2 sec. faster than a similarly modded six speed speed:woowoo:

A good tuner using HPTuner etc., can set your shift speed as quick as you want (or your trans will hold) so there's really no need in a shift kit for that.
If you want to control the shifts, just put in in 1, 2 or 3 and shift when you want.
One thought though; once you determine where you want the car to shift based on torque curve etc., simply set the PCM to shift at that point and you will NEVER miss the shift point because of human error:thumbsup:

a automatic is easyer on the drivetrain and will give more constitant et at the drag strip.

For the most part all your really fast drag cars are all AT right?

The Automatic may have a faster 1/4 mile speed but I love driving stick so much that it doesen't matter to me. :burnout:

Now on the street though, I just have never ever thought of buying a sports car with an auto.

Good point there. That's what we use to do with bracket racers in the 80's. It was a new thought but it was tough to beat! Personally I won't pull the tranny out. I'll tune it and maybe change out the rear end gears!:cowboy:
