I had to tape it down, just started about 6 months ago when I changed my oil I noticed that my oil dip stick was loose, if you follow and there was oil splattered on my hood right above it. So that time I didn't think anything of it and pushed it back. Checked it again that night and it was popped up again so I taped it down.
Do I need to change the dip stick or something?

Is it the dipstick that is loose or the dipstick's tube? Either way, just put a little bend in it and shove it back in place

Sounds like you may have a blockage in your PCV system. That is the usual cause of "floating dipstick".

Check the lines going from the knock plate at the front of the engine below the intake manifold as well as the fresh air tube going from the valve cover to the throttle body. If they are plugged up for any reason that is your culprit. You may have to change the PCV valve itself if it's completely gunked up and inoperative. GM charges a fortune (~$125) for that little POS. If you can clean it, you save $$. Let it sit in carb cleaner overnight if it's gunked up badly.

Or, if the o-ring on the dipstick is not there anymore or is rock-hard. Check that first. :thumbsup3:

Sounds like a PCV problem like DTS said, usally caused by a build of pressure in the crankcase.

On my Miata I had a similar problem and the dip stick part itself just wore out and it didn't fit snug into the tube so when I got a new dip stick it fit snug again.

Hi There:
Sounds like excessive pressure in the crankcase exiting at the weakest point the dipstick.I would start with a change of the pcv valve. a/c delco p/n cv948c. Cost about$5.00 from the dealer. Easy to remove if you have a spark plug boot pliers. Tough to do without it.As a someone said make sure you have a good o-ring on the stick.
