For the average fella, up to what HP would a double be needed?

They are chains not belts on LS motors, and a stock LS2 chain is good for quite a lot of HP (Ive personally had them well over 600rwhp in my car).

The single chain is perfect for most of us.

The timing chain is just driving the cams / valves. So as you raise horsepower, there isn't much additional strain.
The factors are:
how radical the CAM
how strong the valve strings
how high you (want to) rev (I think double would be a detriment)

LS2 chain is pretty good for 90% of the applications. However that being said, valvespring rate and cam design can add additional load to the system. And for those extreme applications, Jesel has your solution. :D

I thought that there was a company that made a belt driven timing set up for the LS?
