My 1st post -
Hello, We are close to buying our first 'vette - 1989 torch red convertable with 89,000 miles on it. It looks like it just came off the showroom floor! Do you members have any "check this or look at this" suggestions? I know there is a huge pool of knowledge in a forum such as this.
Thank you,
Dave:patriot:

Check the weatherstripping closely as it is expensive to replace. Same for the seats, be sure the leather is not cracked, etc. Otherwise it is very much like checking over any other 20 year old car. Does the owner have all the maintenance records? Carfax?

I would locate someone in my area competent in the inspection of Corvettes and pay them to inspect entire car........it will be your best investment in Corvette ownership:welcometoourcl

They are in Maine so that could be a little tough.

First thing i do is a car fax check on the vehicle, that way you will know if it has been in an accident or if it has any flood damage. Besides that it is basically like any other vehicle, check the fluids, look for leaks, that sort of stuff. If you know a good mechanic take it to him and have him give it a good once over. Good Luck!

$11,500.00. I have just seen pics of it and we have been talking. I was supposed to meet him half way last Friday but it was raining and he doesn't take it out in bad weather. We are trying for this Thursday. About 130 miles apart. In the pics this thing looks like it just arrived at the dealers lot from the factory! Thanks for the help. - Dave

95vette - We are at the northern end of the Appalachian Trail at Mt. Katahdin. I was in Atlanta back in 2002 and we had a great meal at Papa Deaux'. Large amount of crawdads dumped in a heap on a large table. If I remember correctly, there was beer too! We went to a Braves game (it was HOT that day) too. Thank you Metso Automation.

Yes .... make sure you check all the weatherstripping including the rear hatch corners where it can be hidden pretty well. Also, check the door carpets after it gets wet to see if there is any leaks, too. Thats where mine was leaking from.... the door seal that goes around the door(top & bottom). Beside that ... Good Luck .... You will love it http://www.smokinvette.com/corvetteforum/images/smilies/sSig_welcometoourclan.gif

Tried it out last night - VERY NICE! Sure was well taken care of. After we drove it he was getting ready to leave and it wouldn't start...
Checking a C3 tomorrow, but was impressed with the C4.

It's not a real big deal to some but check the roof and see if the fabric is up well or drooping. Also make sure both headlight motors work. You could look and make sure all the body panels line up, especially at the door edges and where the hood closes. Little things like that could be indications of something bigger in the past, but the Carfax would tell you that. Check all the radio and climate controls to see that they work, as well as all the gauge cluster lights. On the radio turn the dials to where you can only hear one or two at a time and make sure they all work, those aren't cheap to replace either. Then again on a Corvette nothing is haha. Good luck though and don't get to anxious about it and just commit. If anything seems fishy or out of the ordinary ask lower or say no altogether just like buying any car. If this one doesn't work out there's always plenty more out there.

We bought the '89 red convertible last night! Very nice to drive. Today it was vacuumed, seats were conditioned, interior and under the hood Armor-All ed, and a coat of Liquid Glass on the exterior. Tonight it is in the toy-box with a cover on it. I have been looking at the MagnaFlow #15658 catback exhaust for it. Now...can I buy the GM service manuals for this on dvd? Thank you for the help.

I am sure you will enjoy your Vette. From my own experience don't put to muck stock in a carfax report. The car can have been in a bad accident and it won't show on " any " report if it is not reported to DMV or and Insurance Co. has been involved. I got my 88 nine years ago and it had a clean Carfax report. Now I find it was hit pretty hard on left front. No big deal. A Corvette can be repaired just like any other car. The damage on my car was repaired well enough but the repaint is now starting to show. I will just have a quality paint reopair done. Love the car. 56ooo miles, never been in the rain.

You might check eBay for DVD manuals, just make sure you can trust who you buy it from. I got shop manuals for my '95 on there, they're used but lots cheaper than buying them new. Can't guarantee it is on DVD but I wanted the actual book so I could take it to the car if I worked on something.
