: IL Emissions - Need Help
TeamYellow 06-20-2009, 04:22 PM I have an '07 LS2 M6 and am planning on getting the Techco SC as soon as it is available. Does anyone know if there is a problem getting through the Illinois emissions visual inspection with either long tube headers (have to relocate the cats) or shorty headers (cats in normal location)? Either type of header is probably technically illegal but have you been able to get them through without a hassle? Thanks.
devereaux 06-21-2009, 01:28 AM My limited experience is that they don't even test relatively new cars. When they DO test a car, it is usually just an idle testing at the exhaust, so it's really pretty easy to pass. If you are not removing the cats, then I would guess you will pass. However, it might be better to have someone with headers in Illinois make some comments.

Thanks. I haven't received my first test notice but if it is going to be a hassle getting headers through, I would prefer to not buy them.
I was hoping someone from IL would reply. Anyone, anyone?
devereaux 06-23-2009, 11:12 AM I live outside of Chicago. I own an 06 Pilot, an 07 vert, and my daughter's 01 Beetle is registered to me (plus a 73 911) I have only gotten notices for emission testing for the beetle - the 911 has antique plates so it is exempt from testing. So far no testing for either the Honda or the Corvette. Had an 05 350Z that I got rid of last year, and IT was never emission tested. As I said, I believe it is the older cars that are tested, but I don't know the age at which it begins to be tested. You might call Springfield and ask at what age cars begin to be tested.
?That help.
devereaux 06-23-2009, 11:19 AM The testing has also greatly changed over the years. Use to be you drove in and they put your car on a dyno-like device and tested at RPM. Guess there were a LOT of complaints. I know that I REFUSED to allow anyone else to drive my 911. I got all the usual hoopala about how they were trained, and I countered that then they could sit in the pax seat and supervise. Guess there was enough of that complaint that they dropped that part. Now you drive in, they put a probe in your exhaust, sometimes they check your gas cap, and you are out of there in 5 minutes. They do not look in the engine bay, just look to see if you pass. I wouldn't expect headers to fail if you either keep the cats or install high flow cats. :coffeetime:

Anything 1994 & older is emission exempt, But I'm not sure about new cars I think It's 3yrs after purchase for your 1st test. I just got a notice for my 06 caravan to get done.

Thanks. I think I might take a chance since they apparently aren't actually doing a visual if the emissions pass.

Thanks for the input.
Shaummy 07-10-2009, 06:43 AM The last time I went to emissions testing (a couple of years ago) in my '04 Lightning, I don't think they even used the tailpipe probe, they simply attached to the OBDII port and it told them what they wanted to know.
Now for pre-OBDII cars maybe they still do the tailpipe thing, not sure.
