: Please help..my 89 dies when going up hill..
Big Daddy 360 03-22-2009, 02:55 PM I replaced the fuel filter. It idles and drives fine on fairly flat roads, but when I try driving up a moderately steep hill of about 400 yards (incline about 35 to 40 degrees or so) it dies about a quarter of the way up. Ahy siggestions would be greatly appreciated as always. Thanks in advance.
CFI-EFI 03-22-2009, 03:10 PM The year of the car would be nice to know, but regardless, I would start by monitoring the fuel pressure as the problem occurs.

Big Daddy 360 03-22-2009, 03:31 PM It is an 89'. I think I listed it in the title, but at any rate should I start with the fuel pump? Has anyone else experienced this?

That's where I would start. It may be starting to fail.

Has anyone else experienced this? When I started reading the first thread, I didn't look back to the thread title to look for the year. My advice applies regardless of the year, as I believe I noted. Maybe, as you were advising me that the year was in the thread title, you forgot to read the rest of my post. I never advise throwing parts at a problem. It may be a bad fuel pimp, but if you replace it before you test it, you'll have to pay for it whether that is the problem or not.

I agree on the fuel pressure, it sounds as though you are running out of fuel while going up hill.

I plan on testing the fuel pressure and that is exactly what it feels like "running out of fuel". I just wanted to know if anyone else had a similar experience to see what other things may have contributed to their problem.

Your a touchy little fella
toobroketoretire 03-23-2009, 08:03 PM Assuming your fuel level in your tank is high enough to prevent fuel starvation (from fuel running away from the fuel pump pickup), I would venture to guess it is a failing fuel pump also.
As the load on the engine increases many times when pulling a steep hill, the fuel pump has to keep up with that load. So if the fuel pump is weak to start with, it will certainly show it's weakness pulling a hill.
