: Porting my heads for a little power?
howsmyrear 12-11-2007, 06:08 AM Hey everone! I want to get a little more power out of my C5, I already have exaust and a cold air intake and one of my buddies that I go on cruises with told me that it would be good to get my stock heads ported out. Is this a good option and what kind of power can I expect to see from this? Thanks you all!

I am not an expert but I think that you can pick up like 20 hp from porting your heads and it is not that expensive either. But wait until an expert chimes in!!
smokinvette2 12-12-2007, 05:26 AM In my opinion it is a viable option to do if you want to add a little more power with out going too crazy on the wallet. The amount of power that you do get will depend on how good the person that is porting your heads is! As far as power gains are concerned, I would say that 20 extra horses is not a far fetched number!

Ed @ Late Model Speed 12-12-2007, 07:10 AM You can definately see some good gains from head porting. The biggest question would be to determine what exactly you have now. If your car is an LS1 engine, 10-15 hp can be gained by porting and re-installing the factory heads. Another thing to consider due to the labor involved in removing and re-installing heads, is that upgrading to some ported LS6 heads and intake will show you closer to 40 hp improvement! We sell new GM LS6 heads that have been CNC ported for 1299.00 a pair outright, and include new GM valves and valvesprings.
Of course, with all that newfound airflow, a cam change might start looking good...........
These engines will really respond to modifications, the real question becomes how far do you want to go with it.
Let me know if I can answer any questions,
Ed

With a cam you looking at over 100HP gained? But also this turns into a big job? I'm just starting to play around with my car, actually starting on upgrading the brakes then I was going to do something with the motor. I have a 2003 that I bought with only 38,000 miles on it and it currently has just over 40,000 miles so shes still a young engine.

10-40 HP from just heads? Not to bad, not bad at all :)
smokinvette2 12-14-2007, 05:19 AM My opinion is, if your going to do this mod then do it right and get some good power out of it!! In other words do a good size H/C swap. The last thing that you want is to get it done and say "I wish I went bigger)

How true! Getting to the cam is nearly the entire motor out! Or at least a big part@

I think I know this answer but will ask just to make sure. Putting too large of a Cam in a car will affect Smog, but will boost up the HP numbers, now will a aggressive set of heads affect any Smog issues? Is there such thing as heads that work better with a Procharger? Like a blower cam for supercharged engines?
BLKDragon 12-17-2007, 06:20 AM I'm getting just under 400RWHP from a head and cam package. Best investment that I can recommend.

This brings up a good question. If you were to install a maximum flow set of heads, and keep your same cam, the HP would increase slightly at the peak, but you may actually lose power at lower RPM'S. You would not really affect your smog, because you're keeping the same cam profile, but you wouldn't be taking full advantage of the heads either. In a Supercharged/Turbo application, better flowing heads will allow you to make more power at similar boost levels because the heads will be less of a restriction. With that said, forced induction engines are not as sensitive to head flow as a N/A engine would be, because the blower will force that air through the engine.
Hope this helps,
Ed

:iagree: You got me thinking and I recall hearing something like this, so he would need to get different cam specs to get the lower end torque back on the curve?
