Is there a proper way of getting the rust off the rotors or do you just up and drive the car and let the brakes deal with it?

I just take it for a quick spin and the rotors are no longer rusty. You could take them off and paint the centers(that don't contact the pads) if it bothers you that much.

Just drive it. The pads will wipe the rust off in short order.

Bare metal + Moisture = Rust.
Using your brakes will take care of it.

Even zinc coated rotors will rust on the contact areas. But, the rest of the rotor stays sweet looking.

Paint, powdercoat or "hat" the non-contact areas.

The hats really make the brake area nice looking!
