Is there a general rule of thumb figure of how much HP is used up from the AC system in a C6 when on?

I know that you loss performance but how much?

I may be wrong, but I think I read that at WOT, the AC system disengages.

Really? I've not even noticed that before. If I have the AC on, and cruising and someone is taunting me I'll turn off the AC for a moment as I lay on the gas. I've never kept the AC on so wouldn't know if the AC automatically disengages. Field trip to the freeway! :smilielol5:

I've never noticed that, so is it still blowing yet the AC compressor is disengaged?

Old trick - still works good. I bought a '76 B-body Dodge from the California Highway Patrol with a 440 in it. Nicely set up car, except for the bench seat (count on the government to not do it 100% right) - dual exhaust, oil cooler, high speed pursuit radials. It had a cut-out switch on the AC for high speed pursuit - did the same thing. Great way to see you have ALL the HP available when you need it. :burnout:

The AC will disengage under hard throttle. BUt if you drag race it is still best to shut AC off because condensation that drips under the car could cause a sudden loss of traction at the starting line. You spin--you lose.

When I know I'm going to be horsing the car, I always just the AC off if on anyway. Keep the power where I want it, at the tires!
