I was just reading an old post here where the topic was "mail order tune". I'm sorry but I don't understand how these would be efficient means of tuning a car. Or would these be considered just a "basic" tune? What if someone has a pool of mods installed on the car? Each car is slightly different even with the same mods right? Isn't that why you hear about base line tunes being sometimes up to 20 to 30 HP different from one another?
So by sending your computer to someone, you are getting basically a cookie cutter tune then? Right?
Wouldn't people be better off going with one of those hand helds then?
Anyone have a mail order tune on their C6?

Clearly a tune where the tuner is present is the best. I don't have a mail order tune but had read on them some time ago. It is a cookie cutter tune based on certain things that you share with them about your car, auto or 6 speed, headers? CAI? etc, they go through all your mods so when the tune is in the car it's pretty close.

And a mail order tune will void your warranty just as quickly as an in person tune. See

A mail order tune is no different than a hand held programmer tune, it'll be close, you'll feel a difference, but when it's all said and done, it's still a file based off some one else's car.
It takes a few minutes of time to do, and makes the tuner extra money.

So was I right about you can change it if the car has headers or CAI for example?

Check this out;
I've been in contact with a tuner that has a variation of the mail order tune:
1st.
You buy the software & cable from the tuner.
2nd.
You receive it & plug it into your car with your lap top,go for a ride & data log your drives.
3rd.
You E-mail the data log to the tuner & let him know what you want to change about your cars performance.
4rth.
He makes the adjustments using his knowledge & experience & E-mails a custom tune back to you.
5th.
You up load the new tune into your cars ECM/TCM & go for a drive,& data log the new tune.
The cycle repeats until you're happy or every time you add a power part or do a modification.

I have done this many times, and it works great. The problem with this is that your out of pocket expense is much higher than the other two options.

Thanks for the tip I have a lockable mailbox, but its such a pain to use its tempting to leave it unlocked you end up skinning your knickles each time you retrieve the mail. After hearing your story, Ill resist that temptation. My brother had his identity stolen and it was not a pleasant experience for him to sort out. Good luck.
