I have a question on the Hypertech tuner that is on page 56 in Corvette Fever magazine January issue. Is this thing for real? A tuner that you can keep in your car and it has a display that shows power and torque? I'm not really sure about these sort of portable display deals, as I recall some of said they aren't the most accurate. But in this ad they are claiming Lingenfelter is using this??? It has my interest and I have dog eared the page. Please give your 2 cents!

Is this the one that also tells you your quarter mile times and 0-60 times and all that stuff? If that is the case I would like to get one as that would be neat to know all that kind of stuff!

I'm looking at it right now, this thing looks more like a dyno read out than 0-60 times and such? Could be wrong. You might want to call these guys up?

Usually they'll have an internal accelerometer that'll measure how fast you're accelerating and for how long before you let off the throttle. That along with RPM and it can estimate horsepower. From a horsepower number and RPM it can then backwards calculate torque.

They're not necessarily accurate but they are fairly repeatable (wind speed, incline, etc. will have effects on the #'s) so for street tuning and performing modifications to your car you can see how much power you're gaining.

With the above calculation you can see that the device is assuming the weight of the vehicle and then just metering how far it's going during a certain amount of time.

They use similar devices in some racing series (especially for AWD vehicles where portable chassis dynos aren't available) that are GPS based, and log location over time with RPM to estimate horsepower numbers. They do this to make sure no one is cheating.

:iagree: these things are good for an estimate or ball park reading, great for 0-60 times and so forth.
