Hello all, I love my c4. crossfire and all. Got a question. On the intake on both side there are the flaps that are open when engine is off and closed at idle and open under acceleration. I cut the hoses and blocked off the ends and it seems to have a lot more snap and low end. Can someone tell me about these flaps and their merit. thank you....brian

The "flaps" in the air cleaner are for the same purpose as the flap in any air cleaner above a wet flow manifold. It is a primary part of the THERMAC (THERMostatic Air Cleaner) system. When the engine is cold, the flaps are closed forcing the inlet fresh air to be drawn through the heat stove tube that gets air heated by being circulated around the exhaust manifold. This is a very common system in carbureted cars. The warmer air allows for better vaporization of fuel in a cold engine enhancing cold engine driveability. That is also why the intake manifold gets hot water circulated through it. Engine heat opens the flaps as well as the lack of vacuum at WOT.
