After the heater issues, I wanted the rest of fluids in car to be changed. The mechanic was telling me that dex-cool isn't good to put in cars, even thought GM recommends? He said dex cool eats through gaskets?

Hmmm, that is the first time that I have heard that. Dex is suppossed to be the best product for the Vettes. Dex is alll that I have ever and will ever use unless GM recomends something else!!!

I have been in the repair industry for over 25 years. I always recommend changing the Dexcool. Too many horror stories. I am on my 7th and 8th vettes, and have changed them all.

This is a pretty hotly debated subject, but I’ll throw in my .02. When Dex-Cool was first introduced there were some issues with it in cast iron block engines. GM went to Dex-Cool because it is LESS corrosive to aluminum components, however in a mixed metal engine and IF the coolant was exposed to air it turned to a muddy sludge and hence the original problem with it. It used to be a problem with iron blocks that developed a leak in the coolant system especially the Vortec.
My take on it is that a major automotive manufacturer is NOT going to grenade one of its flagship models with corrosive coolant! . I respect jpace54’s experience and knowledge and there is NOTHING wrong with changing out Dex-Cool with a coolant meeting or exceeding GM’s spec.
I’m not going to get into a debate on this, this is just my opinion supported by the facts above, I’m going to stick with Dex-Cool because I like the color! :D

First I'm hearing of this, I find it hard to believe that Chevy would still recommend putting dexcool in these cars if there was ANY problems? Whay to many lawsuits could open up!

I have had Dex-cool in my 77 for about 5 years now. I am going to install a new radiator support and will be draining the radiator. I will let you guys know how it looks. Chuck

I've also heard the issues with an iron block engine and dexcool. My $.02 is this...
...if Corvette engineers intended to use Dexcool, I'm going to use Dexcool. They know a whole lot more than I do.

I've been running Dex Cool for so long that I forget and never any problems.
