: Changing the serpentine belt
stevenk 01-13-2009, 10:14 AM Last month in order for me to change the serpentine belt I had to remove the crank pulley is this the normal procedure? This was a pain, I thought this would be an easy job. I also wanted to change the water pump, hoses etc. Not a 1-2-3 job.

If you look close down by the tensioner, you'll see a place to put a 3/8" breaker bar, you can move the tensioner with the bar and remove the belt, easy as pie...there is a special tool that works better, but the breaker bar will do just fine.
stevenk 01-13-2009, 04:25 PM Done that-- I had removed everything that you had to, the belt would not come off the crank pulley. The space between the crossmember and the crank pully was thinner than the serpentine belt.
CorvetteMongo 01-13-2009, 04:29 PM I'd look for a broken motor mount then...there should be all kinds of room to get the belt out.
stevenk 01-14-2009, 07:39 AM Thanks, kinda figured something like that!

:iagree: I also changed out my belt myself and the hardest part was getting the belt back on. Getting the breaker bar in position is tricky but can be done.
I can't remember what order of pullies I put the belt on but I believe it's easiest when you slide the belt over the crank shaft then the alternator then under the power steering pully.
HUMVET51 01-14-2009, 08:43 AM Hey there!! Im in the process of the same operation . Ive got two words for you--"ROCK AUTO"!! If you have a C-5, you can get a CDROM from them on the service and technical advice for about $15. Very helpful and since its snowy and cold out, youre probably not driving anywhere anytime soon anyway. If you order online and youll be back in business in about a week. GOOD LUCK!!:

I couldn't remove the serp. belt unless I removed the crank pulley. Still very cold in the garage , when it warms up or I get bored I will look at it again. Could be rotted out body mounts?

 NO!
chappy 01-23-2009, 03:47 PM Check engine mounts, clearance is tight, use WOODEN BLOCK slightly jack engine.
sexyc4 01-24-2009, 06:28 AM I never thought that it was an easy job either, but then I always had my boyfriend do it! lol:cheers:
C4 for sure 01-24-2009, 07:21 AM I will be changing my serp belt within the next couple of weeks, looks to be plenty of room between the crank pulley and the crossmember on my '96.
c/yellowvette 01-28-2009, 01:20 PM :iagree: Should have clearance without having to remove cr/pulley,check mounts. If not original owner, check for previous repairs to front of the car. :bump2: :iagree:
c/yellowvette 01-28-2009, 01:27 PM Easy job, I used a wrench on the tensioner with no problem.

Hey Steven, what year is yours...I have a 92 and I'm about to change mine out...I must admit it looks tight in there, but from previous experience with serpentine cars, almost all have the universal tensioner that you just pry and release pressure on belt...I will give you some feedback when I deal with it...DDBS:seeya:
stevenk 02-22-2009, 02:34 PM Correct, this should be an easy job. Between the frame and the crank pulley there is no room to take the belt off. Thats why I had to remove the crank pulley. It's still cold in the garage when it gets warmer I will be changing the water pump, exhaust, fuel lines, wheels and tires. 4 more years to retirement southern heat can't wait.
stevenk 02-22-2009, 02:38 PM Sorry forgot to add i'ts a 1987 convertible.
chappy 02-22-2009, 05:33 PM I have seen some also that were like that, drop 3 bolts and swivel leaving the top one in. Dont forget the threadlock on the pulley bolts if you need to remove, they will work loose!
jimmycrackcorn 02-23-2009, 07:49 AM And I think that it is just a 13mm wrench that is all you really need.

On my '96 it is a 16mm off set wrench. You need the off set wrench to clear the water temp sensor. :thumbsup3:
stevenk 03-05-2009, 03:47 PM Still cold over here. Im now in the process of replacing the fuel lines, they are on order. Unfortunately the rear of the car is lifted and I noticed the fuel lines are rotted, the money pit begins. I ordered shocks, exhaust and soon wheels and tires. I hate long Island give me heat! My wife is going to kill me if she ever finds out how much money I am dumping into this car.
