I think you'll find that most here, myself included, run Mobile 1....I personally prefer the 15w-50, but then I live in Florida where it seldom gets even in the 40's. I think the 15w-50 would be alright for even the cold climates, but if your wayyyy up North and drive in the winter, a 10w-something might be a better choice

Questions like this with no info on the year/engine involved are pointless.

Cool, now we know. Run a quality regular motor oil (Valvoline is my favorite). When GM went to the higher operating temperatures of the LT1 they highly recommended synthetic. With the 87 and the L98 synthetic would be extra expense and possibly cause leaks. Just change it on a regular basis, time and/or miles, and use quality filters and you are good to go.

A synthetic oil WILL NOT cause leaks, although being slightly thinner than regular oil, it could be MORE PRONE to leak.
Any car, regardless of year, will benefit from synthetic, as it is not affected as much as a regular oil by being exposed to air. A regular oil should be changed every 90 days, regardless of miles driven, synthetic can easily go a year or more.

You should run the weight oil that your owners manual says to run. For a 87 I think that is either 5w-30w or 10w-30w if your air temps don't go below 0 degrees..You can run synthetic oil but like mentioned above, it can leak. When I put 5w-30w Mobil 1 in my 89 the first time it leaked bad, so when I rebuilt my transmission I tapped in a rear main and went back to Mobil 1 with no more problems.Mobil one can take more heat without problems but for a street car either one will work..WW
