Hello David,

Thanks for the question! What Clay Bar kit are you currently using? Not only are the products that you are using important, but the process and steps in which you use those products is just as important. Clay barring your vehicle is one of those important steps.

What a clay bar does is it removes surface contaminates such as: dirt, industrial fallout, bugs, tree sap, and overspray from your vehicles paint before you to do any sort of polishing or waxing. That way you are not polishing or waxing that dirt back into the paint. Clay barring will give your paint a nice smooth surface. When I clay my vehicles, I often clay everything including my windows and chrome trim.

Claying a Corvette takes about 20 minutes on average. Be sure to follow with a coat of polish and wax once you have finished claying.

If your car is fairly new or your paint is in really good shape, you may not need to clay. The best way to tell is to put a plastic bag like a sandwich bag over your hand and rub your car's finish. If the paint feels gritty, then claying can help. If it feels smooth, I wouldn't worry about claying. You should be able to see some of the contaminents in the claybar after rubbing it on your finish.
