Quick check is to get it on a dyno and see what the air fuel ratio is.
For Naturally aspirated engines 13.0 +/- .4 is pretty normal
For Forced Induction 12.0 +/-.5 is the usual target.

I've read that the 97 runs rich from the factory...is this true? Can it be leaned out and still run fine?
