Who has the best reputation on rebuilding transmission on older Vettes? My transmission is acting up and want to get it serviced/ rebuilt. Thank you very much.

I know you said who but why not do it your self. The word rebuilt can mean different things to different people. There is no better judge than your self.

To rebuild completely is not the same as repair. This can be a very costly undertaking depending on what is replaced in the trans.

You will need at least a bearing, seal, bushing and gasket kit. Front input shaft bearing and main shaft bearing. Two synchro clutches and bronze synchro rings. That should be about it for the most part but if it is jumping out of gear then you will need to look real close at the synchro part of the affected gear as the teeth can be missing or worn off. If something is blown in the trans then you will have to replace those parts as well. You will need to also look at the teeth of the gears for being pitted and or worn as this condition can cause the trans to be noisy also.

I think I would rather take a peek at it my self because if someone else does it you may end up getting just a repaired trans and not a fully rebuilt one. Lets face it, hard parts are very expensive and I would not expect someone else to go and replace things in the trans that they know that they can get away with. Also look for a twisted output shaft and play in the side cover leavers etc.

It's not very difficult at all, just have to look real good and to know what to look for. If you will have to replace some gears then that is going to cost some real money, but what can you do. Better to put in a new gear than have a re builder put in a so called good used gear.

The gears in the trans remain meshed all the time. So it probably would be a good idea if you change a gear that you also replace the gear that it was meshed with.

I have been away from this stuff for so many years I just don't remember everything like I used to about these cars. My guess that a rebuilt trans from some one else would probably go for 2000 bucks if not more today???

I hope this was of some help to you, although It didn't answer your original question.
