I am having a whine comming from the back of my C4.Can I jack up the car and run the tires off the ground.Without causing any damage? This will help isolate the problem.

Thanks

Hello Me,
I have heard that it is not good for the C3 generation. It might be differrent for C4, but for a few bucks you could drain the differential and refill it with fresh oil AND posi-traction additive. Also, and more importantly, this response will put you back on the first page and maybe somebody who knows what he's talkin' about can really help you. 1969RAY

Hello me2
You can run a C4 with the tires off the ground, but with out the weight of the car on the ground your not going to hear anything that will help find your problem.
P.S. NEVER RUN A C2 or C3 WITH THE TIRES OFF THE GROUND. If you have jack stands under the trailing arms so the suspension is loaded you can, But just don't do it. Theres not really anything to gain from it.

Curious, why can't you run a C3/2 off the ground?

I have not had much time to work on the noise problem. While the backend was up on jackstands,If Iturned the wheels forward by hand it would making a squeaking noise. If the wheels were turned backward ,no squeaking noise. It was not a brake noise, because i sprayd the brakes with no change in the noise.I am having a slight auto transmission fluid leak after sitting overnight.I have only had the vett for
about 4 weeks.Next step is to find where the leak is and to replace the gear lub.Does anyone has any idears?

Thanks again,

Hello khan.
On the C3/4 Corvette rear-end it uses snap rings to hold the stub axles in the housing. With the suspension hanging (off the ground) all the weight is being put on these snap rings trying to pull them out of the housing, Then when you spin the axles as the ujoint get in a bind it will push and pull on the stub axle in tell the snap ring comes off and floats around in the gear oil Intel it gets between the ring and pinion gears and explodes your rear end. A bad thing.
