Still working through the minor issues with our new baby, a 84 C4 that we purchased through ebay about a month ago. We have taken care of several of the issues, rebuilt transmission, headliner, tune-up, Pioneer stero installation to fix the po's hack job when he replaced the Bose system with a road master unit and what looked liked 3" home speakers. Now it's time to tackle the digital gauges. I have taken the dash out and followed the instructions I found on the web to troubleshoot the dash problems with no luck. The po had replaced the 4 dash lights with what appears to be bulb sockets out of a small 2 1/16" gauges. He had super glued the sockets to the circuit board and ran wires out the side of the unit to the radio acc wire. I'm considering replacing the digital unit with Autometer or VDO units, 5" speedo and tach in the standard dash spot and 2 1/6" fuel level, volts, water temp, and oil pressure above the radio replacing the switches that control the gauges. Now for the questions, has anyone else done this? With all of the problems I have heard about the digital units, someone must have done it. Thanks in advance.

I know of a few people who have done that. But there are companies that sell new units and also ones who rebuild them, check around. There is something very cool about the digi dash! :thumbsup3: I also have an '84 and can't imagine not having the digital dash.

Personally, I hated the dash on the early c4's , until I got one. I still think the c5's are best ever, but I've grown like to mine. I wouldn't do this conversion. I've seen a few and they just look wrong in the car to me.

Besides that, by the time you spend the money for the GOOD Autometer or VDO guages, build a panel, buy the sending units and everything else that will be required to mate it all up and make it work right and look decent, you will probably have spent more than you would have by just buying one of the new replacement digital display units. Heck anyone can have steam guages in their car... not many have the cool factor of our digital readouts, though!

There are shops going through ebay that rebuild clusters for less than $200. Just a good speedo and tach will be more than that.
