I have an 86 convertible. The other day the car started hesitating a little. I put some fuel injecter cleaner in it and it only got worse. Today it started bucking real bad and I knew it was time to take her home. Never made it there! Idled real rough and shut off. Tried starting it and it will start for a second but will not stay running. It revs up and then shuts off. Does anyone have any idea what it might be??? The car only has 75,500 miles on it.

C4 for sure

Did the fuel injector cleaner have water remover in it also? Sounds like you may have some water in the tank/bad gas,try some dry gas in the tank.

Have you checked the fuel pump pressure,,,plugged gas filter?

Any codes??

Here are the codes I am getting 12, 22, 34, and 42. I know 34 isnt the problem. I tried starting it without the MAF and that is why I am getting that code. I am not sure what 12 and 42 are. 22 is the TPS, but would that prevent a car from running? Also thank you to those who have replied.

12 is letting you know the computer is working and should always be there (test code). When I got to work I will check on the other code. If it doesn't fire up, you may try putting in fuel (brake clean {flammable} or gas, if it fires up check fuel pressure. I will also look up the fuel pressure spec.

42 is electronic spark timing. It can set when the wires from the base to the cap start getting bad.
From the description i would lean toward checking the pulse arrester. It is a rubber diaphram above the fuel pump that can split allowing alot of the fuel to dump back into the tank and not get pressure through the lines.
Either of these are worth further looking at. Start at the distributor since that is the code setting and make certain that all 4 wires are in good shape.

Hello
Has it been raining where you live?
A big problem with the C4 Corvettes is below the gas cap theres a drain hose in the rubber boot that is subost to drain away rain water. But this time of the year (fall) a small leaf or any thing that falls from a tree can stop this drain hole, Then when it rains it will fill your gas tank with rain water.I see many cars a year with this problem. Water in the fuel will set all kinds of ECM codes

It hasnt been raining and the weather was really nice the days it happened. I am going to put a new TPS on it in the morning. I hope this fixes the problem. Thanks to everyone who responded. I will let everyone know if this works.

Well I replaced the TPS and I am still having the same problem. It seemed to run fine but quit running right in front of a chevrolet dealership. I had them look at it and $120 later they said they THINK it is the ECM. Personally I dont think this is the problem. Anymore suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

O.K. I oicked the vette from the dealership and the **** car is running fine. I ran the **** out of her to see if it would shut off and nothing. I drove her for about an hour and a half and everything seems to be just fine. I cant figure it out. Maybe it was just a short somewhere or it really was the TPS. That is the only thing the dealership did was adjust the TPS cause I did not have it set right.

OK the next day I got in her and started driving her and she acted up again. I am really frustrated because now I have noo idea what to look for next. Could it be the ECM losing connection or could it be the ICM or Spark control module? Please help!

Hello
If the ECM is bad it will do what yours is doing, Run good some times but bad most of the time and set all kinds of codes. Sounds like the dealer got it right for a change.

When I put the v8 in my elcamino it had a bad distributor that was throwing the EST code. Here is how you check. Find the Ignition timing bypass connector. It should be on the passenger side of the car by the ac somewhere. Its a tan wire with a black tracer. When you disconnect this (with the car OFF only. Do not connect or disconnect the wire with the engine on or running) it bypasses the computer's electronic spark timing control. When mine was connected the car ran all kinds of erratic. Timing was bouncing all over the place. When you disconnected it she would run fine. Thats the sign of either a bad distributor or Ignition module.

Tap on mass air flow sensor with engine running, these will not always set a code for mass air flow, a lot of those codes you have are 'ghost' codes, Tps will set if you blip the throttle trying to keep it running.
Check the mass air flow with a small screwdriver handle and tap gently.
If engine faulteres, she's bad!
