My car is a C5 6-spd manual transmission. I put the car in reverse and the gear pops out when the car starts to back up. Is this a clutch or transmission problem? The car holds the other gears fine.

I would align the shifter too see if that helps first. If you need the instructions PM me your Email address.

Reverse is inherently a tough gear even when it’s working properly, I often have to shift into second first and then into reverse to make it easier. If it is indeed taking too much force to get into reverse then a synchro or the lockout solenoid or lockout solenoid sensor could be bad. I’ve heard of some reporting that a weak clutch or one low on fluid can cause this as well.

I have a 2005 C6 and the happens to me every now and then. It will pop out and then it is a little tough to get back in so I have to let off the clutch just a little in order to pop it back into gear.

I have a 2000. Getting into reverse is not as clean as the other gears and it will occasionally: Grind (clutch in “Sysco?”) or pop out. Also, occasionally while backing up it will make a sound that is like a tooth is missing and will just continue moving backward.

Have had it to GM +2 Transmission shops. They generally agree that it is not shifter alignment and either syncro and / or the plastic gear positioner on the shift fork is damaged and there may be a missing tooth on the R gear.

Any thoughts before I spend $1500+ to find out what it is?

Put it in first and then run it into reverse, it should go right in.

I have had this problem and both times it was somthing differnt. The first time was right after my blutch change we were getting ran out of the hobbie shop and they wouldnt let us continue to bleed the clutch so reverse would not stay in what so ever. bleed it and it was fine. The second time it would go in but pop out very easily i took a look at it and the shifter just needed to be aligned. reverse has always been the touchest gear for me and a friend of mine has the same problem both of us have differnt shifters reverse just seems to be a pain for most
