Hey guys how necessary is a tranny cooler?

Absolutely, during higher temps its better for the life of tranny if there is something keeping it cooler. Higher temps can cause the seals to go bad, not to mention the fluid under constant higher temps starts to break down.

What kind of a build you have going on?

I put in a 700-r into my 81 and installed the cooler in front of the radiator. I had to fab a set of brackets for the mount but it worked out perfect. Running the cooler hoses was the major pain, not much room for them. I believe that it was all worth the work.
