I have a 2000 convertible and on occasions when I try to start the car, it makes no attempt to crank. The solenoid does not kick in, the fuel pump does cycle, the battery has plenty of voltage. Then in a minute or ten minutes later (nothing consistant), you try again and it starts right up with no issues. I am afraid to take it to a dealer with no consistant issue, I figure either they will change out the whole starting system or spend 2 days doing diagnostics and come to no conclusion. Not sure where to start...has anyone ever had this problem?

It's more then likely the starter, either the solenoid or the brushes. On one of the occasions when it is dead, have a friend rap the starter with a rubber mallet or such, if it fires up then have the starter/solenoid rebuilt or replaced.
