I have an 84 and the water temp runs at about 200 on the freeway and gets to about 225 in traffic [at a light] before the fan comes on and it will go back down. The car is all original w/ 58k on the clock and seems to run great. Is this were it is supposed to run? Is there something i should do to improve perfomance and longevity?

200 is about where I'm normally at, try putting a smaller thermostat in like 160 or 170, and make sure your antifreeze and water are at a 50/50 mix. If you have to much antifreeze this doesn't disapat the heat as well/quickly as the water would, therefor giving you a little hotter engine temps.

In my opinion 225 is too hot. I would put in the 170 thermostat.I would make sure the radiator is clean.I would also install a manual switch to turn on the fans when you notice a rise in temp over 200.

Agree 225 is way hot. I have a 170 thermostat and recently added larger radiator, I have never seen temps over 200.

you can get 160 thermostat don't expect heat jegs has a adjusable fan actuator I have one but you will go 215 in traffic the older c-4s don't get enough air

I agree 225 is way to hot. I'm running an 84 Vette Motor in one of my street rods and I ran 225 when I first dropped the motor in it. I did exactly what the posts are saying and dropped a 160 thermo in it and it's much better now.

I know it's not a Vette but it's got a Vette motor in it. Modified heavily of course but it still has a Vette heart in her. Unfortunately I didn't have a pic of the motor available.
