The Dana 44ICA will handle about 450-500ft/lbs of torque but it will break if a heavy shock load is applied to it enough times. The weakest part of any rear end is the spider gears and the Dana 44's spider gears are a little smaller than those used in the 8-7/8" earlier rear ends. Corvettes aren't made for drag racing. If you intend to beat on it I suggest you put a 9" Ford rear end in it.
It depends..are you gonna run 10 inch slicks and do lots of 1/4 miles? then no. but if you are gonna run street tires and occassionally turn it loose, yes. I ve got a 383/501 HP in my 81,built up 700r4 trans/stall..my Dana 44 is all new and REM coated 3.73 gears. 2years so far, no problem..I don t run slicks, but I have a 6800rpm redline and it lights up tires in 2nd gear.
