I have a stock 2003 coup, has 32k miles and I drive it everyday. rear brakes squeal after braking from highway speeds. GM dealership has cleaned them several times and and resurfaced the rotors. They have said there is nothing wrong and would recommend a ceramic brake pad replacement. My thinking is to replace the rotors and go with a better grade pad...any suggestions?

I had the same problem. I went with ceramic pads and cross-drilled/slotted rotors. Haven't had the problem since. I think the ceramic pads would have solved the problem but like the aggressive look of the cross-drilled rotors also. atriot:
I have some Hawk PP pads and they tend to squeal a lot - but they stop great !
I tried several things.
On one side of the car I used the old fashion red goop and on the other side I used the new spray-on. Result: Goop wins - the spray on had NO effect. The goop reduced squeal - but not eliminated.
Next - the "spray" side I did 2 things. First I filed a small angle on the leading edge of the pad. The theory is that with such a sharp 90deg angle, it causes vibration. Then I gooped them. Result: Filing an angle on the leading edge DOES work !
So, currently I have goop on one side and goop and angled pads on the others. The filed side is better. I still going to run another 100 mi or so and see if anything changes before filing the other side.
Disc brake squealing happens when the pad's backer plate comes in contact with the caliper while vibrating rapidly during braking. Poor fitting pads, rust or other contaminates, improperly installed pads, pad material, and rotor imperfections can all contribute to this problem. Clean all mating surfaces, apply backer adhesive to the pads , lubricate the areas where pad backer plate slides on the caliper with high temp caliper lubricant. Finally, check the rotors for trueness, glazing, and hard spots in the surface.
Is it all the time or just when you apply the brakes?
