1993 Corvette Breaks a Slumping Vette Market
In 1993 General Motors knew that it had to come out with something special. Not only was the Dodge Viper putting the now famed ZR-1 to shame, but the 1993 Corvette would mark the 40th anniversary of the super car and since collectors and enthusiasts were essentially snuffed in 1983, this decade’s anniversary had to be extraordinary.
Chevy didn’t disappoint and the 1993 Corvette had upgrades and special packages that made the 40th year of this legendary car one to remember. New to the 1993 Corvette was a list of options that covered the inside and outside and the most notable were:
- Passive Keyless Entry System: New and exclusive to the 1993 was a passive keyless entry system. Using a remote keyfob, the user could lock or unlock the doors of the vehicle by simply walking towards or away from it. The driver could program whether they wanted one door to unlock or both doors to unlock and the remote could also be used to turn on the interior lights as well as disengage the alarm system if need be.
- Enhanced Engines: The 1993 Corvette saw fit to beef up both types of engines that were made available for that year. The ZR-1 engine, dubbed the LT5, had modifications performed to its value train and cylinder heads. This was coupled with the use of synthetic oil and platinum tipped spark plugs for a mean 405 bhp which was up from the 375 bhp of the last year of the ZR-1. Not to be outdone, the LT1engine also got a boost of 10 foot pounds of torque and thanks to many different internal improvements the engine ran much smoother than its predecessor.
- Tires: In 1993, the base model Vette took notes from the ZR-1 model and used different sized tires for the front and the rear to help with handling. In the front, the tires were narrowed slightly, and the back saw the tires widen slightly.
Of course all of these changes would be all for not had General Motors not come out with a special edition for the 40th Anniversary. This time collectors and enthusiasts would not be denied and a special edition was made available for the 1993 Corvette. The 40th Anniversary edition included special Ruby Red paint, matching leather interior, and center wheels. The Limited Edition car also featured several special badges. Any 1993 Corvette that had leather interior did come with 40th Anniversary embroidered on the headrest; those who opted for the cloth interior got nothing. Still just owning one of these iconic cars in such a special year was a big enough thrill for many.
At the end of the sales year it was evident that the 40th Anniversary 1993 Corvette had done its job in winning back a good number of Corvette enthusiasts. The proof was in the numbers and for the first time in four years the Corvette saw sales that were up from the previous year. Those who had waited patiently for the 40th year of the Vette to come out held their breath for they hoped would not be another disappointment. When it finally did come out, a huge sigh of relief was let out by all and a true work of art was beheld.
